Cambridge Movers Full Practice Test -- Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking

This is a full practice test for Cambridge YLE Movers. It covers all four skills -- Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking -- and follows the same structure as the official exam. Use this test to prepare your child for exam day.

About This Practice Test

🎯
Goal: By the end of this lesson, your child will know all the vocabulary and be ready for the Cambridge exam!

Cambridge YLE Movers is harder than YLE Starters. The key differences are:

  • Movers uses sentences and short texts, not just individual words
  • Movers requires children to read and write short answers, not just circle words
  • The Speaking section includes Spot the Difference and Odd One Out tasks
  • Children must answer personal questions in the Speaking section
  • The vocabulary range is wider -- about 300 words at Movers level vs 200 at Starters

Exam Timing

  • Listening: approximately 25 minutes (including 5 minutes to check answers)
  • Reading and Writing: 30 minutes
  • Speaking: 5 to 7 minutes per child (one-to-one with examiner)

How to Use This Practice Test

  • Parents: Read the Listening sections aloud, slowly and clearly. Repeat each item twice.
  • Children: Work through the Reading and Writing sections independently.
  • Together: Do the Speaking section as a conversation -- parent plays the role of examiner.

LISTENING SECTION

Listening Part 1: Match Names to People (5 items)

How this works: The examiner (parent) describes people in a picture. The child draws lines to match names to the correct person.

The scene: A sports day at school. There are 8 children in the picture. Six of them need to be identified.

Parent reads aloud (read each item twice):

  • "Tom is the tall boy wearing a blue jacket. He is standing near the finish line."
  • (Child draws a line from the name TOM to the tall boy in the blue jacket.)

  • "Mary is the girl with long brown hair. She is holding a yellow flag."
  • (Child draws a line from MARY to the girl with long brown hair holding a flag.)

  • "Ben is the short boy with glasses. He is running in the race."
  • (Child draws a line from BEN to the short boy with glasses who is running.)

  • "Lucy is sitting on the bench eating an orange. She has a bandage on her leg."
  • (Child draws a line from LUCY to the girl on the bench with the bandage.)

  • "Mr Green is the tall man with a whistle. He is standing next to the track."
  • (Child draws a line from MR GREEN to the tall man with a whistle.)

Practice tip: Before doing this exercise, look at the picture together and describe each person. This helps the child know what to listen for.

Listening Part 2: Write the Missing Word (5 items)

How this works: The parent reads short dialogues. The child listens and writes the missing word or information in a gap.

Parent reads aloud (read each dialogue twice):

  • B: "It is on the twelfth of April." (Child writes: 12th in the gap "It is on the ___ of April.")

  • A: "What is the name of the new teacher?"
  • B: "Her name is Miss Parker." (Child writes: Parker in the gap "Her name is Miss ___.")

  • A: "How much does the ticket cost?"
  • B: "It costs nine pounds fifty." (Child writes: 9.50 or nine pounds fifty in the gap "It costs ___.")

  • A: "Which bus goes to the museum?"
  • B: "You need to take the number forty-two bus." (Child writes: 42 in the gap "Take the number ___ bus.")

    Listening Part 3: Choose A, B, or C (5 items)

How this works: The parent describes a situation. For each question, there are 3 picture options (A, B, C). The child circles the correct picture.

Parent reads aloud (read each item twice):

  • "Anna is going to the park today. She is not taking her bicycle. She is going on foot."
  • - Picture A: a girl with a bicycle - Picture B: a girl walking - Picture C: a girl in a car (Answer: B)

  • "The family is having dinner in the kitchen. They are not at the table -- they are sitting on the floor."
  • - Picture A: family at a table in the kitchen - Picture B: family sitting on the floor in the kitchen - Picture C: family eating in the garden (Answer: B)

  • "Peter is ill today. He has a stomach ache. He is in bed with a book."
  • - Picture A: boy with a headache sitting at a desk - Picture B: boy in bed holding his stomach - Picture C: boy in bed reading a book (Answer: C -- he is in bed reading)

Listening Part 4: Which Person? (5 items)

How this works: Two children -- Sam and Emma -- have an adventure. The parent reads statements. The child writes A (for Sam) or B (for Emma).

    Parent reads aloud:

"Sam and Emma went on a school trip to the zoo. Sam wore a green hat. Emma wore a red coat. At the zoo, Sam saw the elephants first. Emma wanted to see the giraffes. Sam bought a toy monkey from the shop. Emma bought a postcard. Sam dropped his water bottle near the lion cage. Emma helped him find it. On the way home, Sam fell asleep on the bus. Emma read her book."

  • This person dropped something near the lion cage. ___ (Answer: A)
  • This person read on the way home. ___ (Answer: B)

  • Listening Part 5: Colour and Write (5 items)

How this works: The parent gives instructions. The child colours parts of a picture and writes words where shown.

The picture: A town high street with a bus, a shop, a park, a school and some people.

Parent reads aloud (read each instruction twice):

  • "Colour the bus red."
  • (Child colours the bus red.)

  • "Write the word 'OPEN' on the door of the shop."
  • (Child writes OPEN on the shop door.)

Their dad went cycling along the beach path. Their mum went to a small cafe and had coffee and cake. At half past twelve, the whole family had a picnic on the sand. They ate sandwiches, fruit and biscuits. They went home at four o'clock in the afternoon.

    • "A bird is flying over the water."
    • "It is a sunny day and the park looks beautiful."

    SPEAKING SECTION

Speaking Part 1: Spot the Difference

How this works: The examiner has one picture and the child has a different picture. They describe their pictures to find 4 differences. In this practice version, the parent describes both pictures.

Picture A (parent has this): A bedroom scene. A boy is reading a book on the bed. There is a green lamp on the desk. The window is open. There is a cat sleeping on the floor.

Picture B (child has this): A bedroom scene. A boy is listening to music on the bed. There is a red lamp on the desk. The window is closed. There is a dog sleeping on the floor.

How to describe the differences (model answers):

    • "In my picture, the boy is reading a book. In your picture, he is listening to music."
    • "In my picture, the lamp is green. In your picture, the lamp is red."
    • "In my picture, the window is open. In your picture, the window is closed."
    • "In my picture, there is a cat on the floor. In your picture, there is a dog."
Examiner instructions: Start by saying "My picture shows a bedroom. Tell me about your picture." Let the child describe their picture first. Then help find the differences together if needed.

Speaking Part 2: Ask and Answer

The picture: A zoo with five animals. A giraffe is eating leaves from a tall tree. Two elephants are walking near a lake. A parrot is sitting on a branch. Some children are watching from behind a fence.

Instructions: The examiner asks about the child's picture. Then the child asks the examiner about their picture.

    Examiner asks:

    • "How many elephants can you see?" (Answer: two)
    • "What is the giraffe doing?" (Answer: eating leaves from a tree)
    • "Where is the parrot?" (Answer: on a branch / in the tree)
Child asks examiner (the examiner's picture is the same but with one difference):
    • "Is there a giraffe in your picture?"
    • "How many children are there?"
    • "What colour is the parrot?"

Speaking Part 3: Odd One Out (3 sets)

Instructions: The examiner says four words. The child says which word does not belong and gives a reason using "because."

Set 1: train, bus, kite, bicycle

    • Correct answer: "Kite is the odd one out because it is a toy that flies, and the others are all transport."
Set 2: headache, toothache, book, stomach ache
    • Correct answer: "Book is the odd one out because it is something you read, and the others are all types of pain or illness."
Set 3: Monday, Tuesday, March, Friday
    • Correct answer: "March is the odd one out because it is a month, and the others are all days of the week."
Practice tip: Encourage your child to always use a full sentence with "because." The examiner is looking for a complete answer, not just the word.

Speaking Part 4: Personal Questions (5 questions)

Instructions: The examiner asks the child questions about their own life. There are no right or wrong answers -- the examiner is looking for correct English sentences.

    Questions and sample answers:

  • "What sports do you like?"
  • Sample: "I like playing football and swimming."

  • "How do you get to school?"
  • Sample: "I go to school by bus. It takes about twenty minutes."

  • "What do you usually do in the evening?"
  • Sample: "I usually do my homework and then watch TV."

  • "What is your favourite day of the week, and why?"
  • Sample: "My favourite day is Saturday because I go swimming with my dad."

  • "Can you tell me about a trip you went on?"
  • Sample: "Last month, I went to the beach with my family. We went by car. I swam in the sea and ate ice cream."

Examiner instructions: Listen for: correct verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and use of "because" to give reasons. Do not correct during the test. Make notes and give feedback after.
