What counts as "risky play," exactly
Researchers use the term for activities kids initiate themselves that involve some uncertainty of outcome — climbing higher than feels totally safe, playing near an edge, rough-and-tumble wrestling, exploring somewhere new without an adult narrating every step. It's not recklessness. It's supervised, age-appropriate risk that the child is choosing and calibrating themselves.
The evidence is no longer thin
A 2026 scoping review published in PMC pulled from 5,218 references down to 40 empirical studies that met inclusion criteria for nature-based risky play. Every single one — all 40 — reported positive associations across developmental domains. The recurring themes: resilience, confidence, wellbeing, physical skill, autonomy, and what researchers call "nature connectedness."
A separate 2026 review in the European Journal of Education looked specifically at early childhood teachers and found something more complicated: teachers do recognize the developmental value of risky play, but hesitate because of safety concerns, liability worries, and unclear accountability if something goes wrong. That review synthesized 18 empirical studies using the Joanna Briggs Institute framework — a research methodology built specifically for evidence reviews in health and education fields.
So the gap isn't a knowledge gap. Teachers know the benefits. It's an institutional and psychological one.
Why it matters beyond scraped knees
The developmental logic isn't "kids need danger." It's that risk assessment is a skill, and skills only develop with practice. - Share the injury data, not just the benefit data. Most risky-play research also tracks injury rates, and the pattern across the literature is that supervised risky play does not meaningfully increase serious injury — it mostly just increases scraped knees, which were already common at recess anyway.
- Put it in writing once, not case by case. A short risk-benefit statement in the classroom handbook at the start of the year saves a dozen individual conversations in October.
